Bought a used 1973 TX 750 a couple of months ago with the intent of restoring (as needed) and selling for profit. This is my 7th resto/flip and always do good. Engine appeared to be seized as it would not kick over. Neither myself or the owner knew anything about this bike, fact I didn’t even know they existed! After purchase, I learned that the valve cover couldn’t be removed without removing the engine. Being satisfied that the engine was seized, I removed it from the frame. Removed valve cover to reveal what to be reflective of the 2,900 miles on the odometer. All engine internals appear new, and learned that the starter chain was the culprit of the seized condition. Took starter chain from case and engine spins freely. Went ahead and put new rings on the nearly new looking pistons an re-assembled using new gaskets. Re-installed engine by shop manual. Modified left side panel with nylon “ramp” to snug starter chain.
All together now with cleaned carbs, (left carb was completely unusable, replaced with flea-bay), set points using digital aural voltmeter. Bike producing healthy blue spark, but will not start. Not really understanding this kick starter....it will only spin the crank about 1 revolution before it hits the foot peg! After 3 days of spinning with the starter, still won’t start. Rotated entire points plate just to see what happens, and she fired and ran smooth for about 2 seconds.
Questions: 1) What the heck is going on with this kick start? CANT be right!
2) Why would it try to run better by advancing the timing? Cam was installed per manual,
Compression is good (150/150),valve clearance double checked, coil wiring verified twice.
3). Oil filter replacement for under $90???
4) Engine has modified sump installed, does this make the bike more reliable?
5) how much is it worth in 80% condition? (Needs tires, tank has minor scratches)
Thanks for the info, love 5he site!!!
