Hi Roy,
The kickstart is a separate and almost indestructable system. If it does not catch when you kick it: Just remove the kickstarter and cover and note where the two springs engage. You can pull it out completely, the hairpin like spring should be tight in the groove (grabbing it) on the sprocket. If not, remove it and bend it a little bit together and re-install everything. The end of spiral spring must be slipped over the protusion with a little pre-tension, this will keep the kick in the upright position. Have fun!

Had another run on the TX today. Not smoking as much as it did. Not sure the motor sounds too good.

A very interesting read. This kind of dedication is as suggested an illness. I must have the symptoms, I have an opportunity to buy a 72 TX, and although there are several things wrong with it I find myself drawn to repairing it. It was imported in 2013 from USA has only 11000 miles on the clock, is very original apart from the exhausts. ?? What to do.
