That's a nice looking bike. That is the deep sump as it extends below the frame rails. To remove the engine from the frame it's necessary to remove the extension first. The sump was only one of several "fixes" for the TX750, but probably the most critical for longer engine life.

The tech section of the forum has the information. Look under the service bulletins for a list of changes over the years. By the 1974 model year the production line incorporated the changes. In the US the changes were handled at the dealer (if at all) up to and including replacement engines. You might check to see if the frame and engine numbers match, or if the engine has no number. The most notable changes were the deep sump and an adjustable omni phase balancer system vs. fixed. I'm not sure if you can tell just by looking if the omni phase is the new version. There were also fixes to mitigate oil leaks, and in some markets an oil cooler as standard vs. optional. The different markets also would have a 14 liter tank or 19 liter tank, dual front brakes vs. single, and different paint.

You can tell if the omni-phase balancer has been upgraded. You will see a thin flat plate washer approx 30 mm in diameter with a bolt through the center located on the bottom left hand side of the engine and the flat washer will be bent against the engine casing to stop it from moving. This holds the new style eccentric style shaft from turning. By removing the washer you can adjust the chain tension.
Hope this helps.
