I bought the one listed in the second row. I'm in Tennessee and it was located in North Dakota, I got lucky and found a local shipper coming my way last week. I now have it and am pleased with it. This will be the 5th Yamaha I will have restored although this one will not need a lot of work as the paint and chrome is in really good shape. I was aware of the problems associated with this early bike, 1973 with a production date of 11/72. After searching for info on it I found both this forum and the fact that some engine were replaced with factory engine without serial numbers. At first I couldn't even find a place for the numbers, but a friend who was once a Yamaha mechanic told me to look on the front, just under the starter for it. If this is right, I found an area with a slight raised cross hatch pattern but no numbers. Is this right? I also noticed the oil sump cover seems to have an extension piece 2 inches deep. I also have bought a Yamaha service manual and I noticed that a service bulletin, #302, in the back talked about replacing the starter chain drive and sprocket. I'm wondering if this would have already been done if this a factory replacement engine. The starter spins but will not engage the engine so I'm going to have to disassemble it find the problem. An suggestions? TennJoe

Congratulations, and welcome. It does sound like you have a factory replacement engine with the modifications. I had the same issue with my starter. That's a known weak link, but the repair is relatively easy, and the replacement roller dowels and springs are available. Argo1974 has developed a more robust starter clutch, you might send him a message if you want to update.

Thanks for the info farmrjohn, you said the parts are available, I checked on partzilla, they list PIN, DOWEL #93615-12088-00 as available from Yamaha but not the SPRING, COMPRESSION (341-155890501-03298-00. Does anyone know another source?

Does anyone know a source foe the O-ring that seals the valve adjusting covers, P# 93210-45191-00 other than the ones for $10 each? Usually you can purchase generic O-rings for less that a dollar, however I've not been able to find that size. I measure them at: 46mm id x 52mm od x 3 mm, is that right? I'm about through renovating the one I bought in July and will post pictures soon.
