I had to remove the front wheel and tire due to a flat, and while I had the front wheel off, decided to replace the dried out fork wipers with gaiters. (don't know why this posted sideways??)

Looks nice, and off topic, what kind of wind screen is that?

The fork wipers or dust seals as listed at Bike Bandit www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/1976-yamaha-xs650-xs650c-front-fork-xs650c look like the ones we'd use for the TX. But what is a gaiter? Mine are cracked and need of replacement.

I think the 650 forks were 1mm smaller than the 750, but you can check the Yamaha parts numbers to confirm compatibility. The gaiters are the rubber boots covering the chromed part of the legs, used instead of the wipers. I used truck shock boots, available at any auto store for around $5 each. I cut off three bellows sections and put the remaining edge in the groove on the fork lower, and the top is nice friction fit. It is necessary to make a small pressure relief hole in each boot to let air back into the boot after the strut extends from a compression stroke.

I will hunt around for some, my wipers are cracked too, and I like the look of the gaiters.

The small pressure relief hole is important. I couldn't figure out why my new fork seals were leaking with the bike just being moved around the garage and not being ridden on the road (yet). I'm sure it's because I didn't have a relief hole and the fork oil was effectively being pumped out.
