The "earlier" production bikes need a sump extension, part number 31 here tinyurl.com/l65bckf You can tell if the bike has it if the bottom of the crankcase extends below the frame rails.  |

The earlier models also had no way of adjusting the chain turning the balance weights which caused the engines to vibrate. The sump extension and the adjustable shaft were the improvements on the last models. Yamaha provided some update kits to the dealer network but not many of the bikes got the re-work.

A quick search of a couple of the online parts suppliers indicates the sump extension is not available new. There is one on ebay at the moment, but it seems a bit pricey. I didn't check for the upgraded balancer system. There is also a complete '74 engine that would have all of the upgrades that are in the reference section. That makes for some nice reading to follow all of the upgrades as far as leak corrections etc. over time.

i had the orange model with the omni phase balancer and it still spun a big end bearing WHY ?
