Sealing The Case Halves - what to use?

Im going to start to reassemble my 73 teardown and I'm not sure what to use to seal the case halves. It looks like there is a brown substance that was applied as a liquid and has become brittle over time. I have Super Black RTV gasket maker for high temps I'll be using for the gasket replacement, but wasn't sure if that should be used between the case halves as well?

You can use RTV gasket maker for sealing case halves.

I've been using black Suzuki bond in the past but once I had to re-open an engine after 5 or 6 years, I found it hard and brittle. Went to Threebond 1194 then, but now I'm using Threebond 1211. The 1211 provides better sealing and isn't easy to remove. It will cost twice compared to 1194 though.
