Justin, Sounds like a choke problem. Have you made absolutely sure the passageways I described in a previous post are clear and open ? The drilled passage for choke fuel, the choke fuel source and the non removable jet for choke circuit needs to be cleeeeeeeeean. No if ands or buts , if this circuit is plugged you'll have a hell of a time starting a cold engine. Check out the photo in the link below. 650rider.com/index.php?name=Forums&file=download&id=4395

I made it a point last time to clean that passageway. Saw a post on xs650.com about that.
I'll pull the carbs tomorrow.
It is such a small hole that can cause a huge issue.

On my bike the battery needs to have a good charge to get it started. I only kickstart and if the battery is low it will take like 50 kicks to get it started. Normally it's a first kick bike when cold without the choke. Get a real battery tender and charge your battery right up to float charge level, then try to kick start it and see how it goes.
If it starts when you jump start it from your truck, I'd say it's at least somewhat battery related.

All I did today was rode it to work.
No wait, I topped up the oil before I left the house.

Today I rode it to work again, lubed the chain, it was overdue by a bit, and I just epoxied the right tank badge back on, the studs broke last week. My left badge is missing, but the paint and stickers are original and really faded so it doesn't look out of place, just looks like the old bike it is.

I lubed my chain again Wednesday. Probably the shortest 500 mile interval between chain lubes on his bike, aside from on trips. This thread is turning into my maintenance record.

After setting the TX aside for over a month now, I decided to go at my starting issue again.
Pulled the carbs off my XS650 and swapped out the float needles, floats, and bowls (stock pilot and main jets). The XS650 bowls do not have drain tubes at the bottom, that's about the only difference.
They bike fired up great and idled perfect.

I have neglected this forum for too long.
This week I jumped back into the shop and pulled my oil pain, left / right engine covers, carbs, and exhaust off my TX.
Here's my list of to-do's for this week: - Replace o-rings and seal on rotor cover (ignition points area). - Find any oil leaks and follow service bulletins - Cut exhaust crossover. Weld each open end shut. - Troubleshoot aftermarket petcock leaks. - Troubleshoot intermittent headlight problem

Today,I fixed my 45 mph death wobble. Which required pulling the top clamp, chasing ball bearings, cleaning and inspecting said balls, inspecting races, then reinstalling after a thorough lubing, and proper tightening of stem nuts, not the old steroid torque that was previously applied.. no more death wobble, now maybe i can finally get around to putting in that new ignition switch, but i think I will miss my screwdriver like i stole starting method
