Oil Filter Adapter Installation

Here's a simple write-up from Toby Folwick on the TX750 oil filter modification / install.

	This photo shows my parts engine with the standard TX750 oil filter in place.
	The first order of business is to remove the screws holding the standard oil filter in place.
	Next, remove the old oil filter cover by unscrewing the 13mm bolt that secures it. The space inside the engine left by removing the cover will hold the new BMW filter.
	These are all the old parts to be discarded. (The old cover makes an unique paperweight).
	The BMW R65/R80 oil filter actually consists of two smaller filters held together with a plastic hinge. Remove the plastic hinge and, voila, you now have two Yamaha TX750 filters. The Fram filter identification number is CH6060 or you may choose to use it's equivalent from another manufacturer. Dennis Kirk carries this filter if you can't find it locally. NAPA Parts Stores also carry the filter. Their part number is #4945.
	These are the parts that make up the new oil filter system. Only three parts are reused from the old system--the large o-ring, the long bolt and the copper washer.
	The new adapter with both o-rings in place.
	The new adapter system ready for installation. Note, the small rubber collar on the BMW filter should be toward the threaded end of the bolt.
	The new adapter system in place. Since the new element is smaller in size, it probably should be changed more often than the old one. The very first TX750's used a multi-disc filter similar to this new system. See the December 1972 Motorcyclist Article for more information and a photo of the early filter. Just a caution note: don't overs tighten the securing bolt or you can break the threaded portion in the crankcase (don't ask how I know). I would suggest getting a longer bolt and cutting off the excess threaded length. Sorry, but I don't remember the length I used, but I believe it was the next longer "stock" length from the original.

I was using R65 oil filter mod for years but switched to a better one several years ago. R65 filter is made in 30 micron technology while modern car/motorcycle oil filters come in 40 micron. Stock oil filter was pretty modern back then being also 30 microns, but R65 filter has only around 60% of the filtering area compared to stock. My filter mod comes with 110% filtering area. I'd consider producing small batch in case of people interested in it.

John, it looks pretty much the same to R65 oil filter mod with slightly higher cover and modern KTM filter (I use german brand non OEM filters from MANN Filter) in it. There should be still few of them around as sold 5 or 6 years ago. I was looking for better oil filtering as most of the crankshafts I had as spare and/or taken out of the engines, especially the 73" ones, had their oil passages more or less clogged with oil sludge. On 73" engines mostly on the left side as oil enters to main oil gallery from the left on 73" engines (in the middle on 74" engines). Additionally, any TX engines seen with fried big end bearings so far, this always occured on the left connecting rod. On 74" engines clogging of the crank oil passages is far less significant.

I can definitely second this.  The stock bolt only grabs a turn or so worth of thread. I got lucky, but there is plenty of depth for a longer bolt and I would highly recommend using one. BE CAREFUL.

Hi all...  new member to this site and just purchased a 74' TX750 that'll be restored (at some point in time).  Curious to know if any of these kits are available, or if you know 'who' was producing them?  Obviously interested in getting my hands on one of those adapters...  Thanks / Brad (in Toronto)

My experience is limited with regard to the adapter, but thus far very favorable. My thanks to Toby who at the time had about 10 of them produced and I got one of them. I'll pull the bolt and see what I need to avoid the breakage that farmrjohn spoke of.
If there is a recommendation (assuming I missed one) for a proper replacement bolt I'd like to hear it.

I measured my replacement bolt at the last oil change and it was 91.5mm in length.  I had cut down a longer bolt (8 x 100mm?) I got from the local hardware store.

Just taken the crank case cover off to check mine & it has an old/original filter on it....would really like to upgrade if someone could point me in the right direction?
