Followed the procedure for setting the timing, but run out of room on the back plate......points start to open/timing set about 1 1/2" past the marks?? Had it all apart, all seems ok, but can't really go wrong as advancer connects to dowel pin (had rotor off to fit new starter clutch, but same really as fits to a key), & shaft end is fitted to the advancer, no excess play anywhere........so what am I missing??

Hey, did you mess with the oil pump and clutch on the other side? Perhaps they are not aligned?

Fitted new clutch plates a while back, seemed pretty straight forward, not touched the oil pump tho' did look at the diagram for that yesterday in case someone else had played with it, but it too looks like dowels will mean it goes back correctly(?)

Hmmm, just had a look at the manual ref clutch, though I only replaced the plates, I suppose if someone in the past had the clutch off & not re-aligned it properly...........only way then, is to check!

Oh, & I think this is how it was set up before as timing is still out by the same amount? ??

Did you find it out? The notch on the clutch basket (any of the three) has to be flush with the punchmark on the drive gear on the crank.

Well, I found out what the problem was (& lesson learned....I hope), all marks lined up fine so went back to the other side & removed cover & flywheel again......not sure how it happened but as I was fitting the flywheel the woodruff key must've come out of its groove & actually embedded itself in the flywheel!! That's where I found it so as bike was running the flywheel probably moved around the crank (it was over an inch out!), I hadn't noticed it as all went back together fine (or so I thought!). Woodruff key won't stay in at all now as it seems to naturally go back into its indent......think I might need another flywheel!!!!

Oh, sucks. Happened to me once, too. Good luck with finding one!
