In a previous thread I mentioned trying to start & set up a single cv carb, I eventually gave up on that & went for a new 40mm roundslide!
I can get it to start & run nicely (on choke only at the moment) & am playing with jetting/air screw........my problem is it will run for a few minutes then just stop!!
Also, I often get a horrible clunking noise sometimes on start up, sometimes when running or sometimes just before it stops!
Anyone know what that could be? I wondered if it was the balance chain (only done 9000 + miles), though engine is un-modded!
Putting in a balance chain adjuster looks a big job, plus where would I get one? (if it is that)
any suggestions would be welcome please
cheers Roy

Hi Roy, I cannot remember if you have done any starter clutch related work, if you have please forgive my poor memory !!, the reason I ask this is my bike made some awful rattling noises at many different times , the majority turned out to be starter clutch related, hope this is of some help. Regards Paul

Hey Paul, thanks for the reply.....I have replaced the starter clutch, it was from a low mileage GPZ305 (same part number but a better unit) which slotted straight on, however, I haven't discounted the fact it might be that.....will take the cover off & have another look (was hoping to avoid spending another £100 or so on this thing for Argo's unit!!) cheers, Roy

Hi Roy, I was lucky with mine a friend had a complete brand new unused genuine Yamaha starter clutch kit and also the gear it runs on, I managed to buy this and several other new bits he had for £50, sadly he no longer has any TX750 bits left before any one asks, sorry they are all on my bike !!. Regards Paul.

Well, decided to buy & fitted a starter clutch from Argo (thanks mate, nice unit & arrived quickly), much quieter & starts easily........however, still sometimes get this 'clunk' & she will just stop? ? Very perplexing!

Further to all the above, I can get her to run now (though still seems rich but still playing with the single carb....) but still have this 'clunking' (which sounds horrible) & if revs too low will just stop!! Re-checked valve clearances & cam chain tension ok.
Taken sump plate off to have a look, all appears ok (not sure what I was expecting), but does anyone know if the oil strainers should come out? They look like they're glued on.......
Any help gratefully received...........

Hi,
The strainer should come off, probably someone before you put it back on using some sealant. I wouldn`t mess with that single carb, I`d just get two originals, they are cheap on ebay. I may have a pair somewhere too in pieces. That clanking is strange, the Argo set should be fine, pehaps it`s coming from somewhere else?

Sounds like it's coming from within the engine, which is why my first thought was balance chain/weights, small amount of movement, which I would expect.......clunking isn't constant, every few seconds when running, didn't want to strip the engine if I could help as there is good compression but may have to.........
Can't find carbs that easily in the UK, more common in the US but postage is really high! Thought I was getting somewhere with the single carb..........?

Can you post a video about the sound when you have the chance?

When I initially fitted the single carb it had a #45 pilot jet in it, which I wondered would be a bit small as each original has a #45, so I went up to about #60 & back down again through various sizes as it was running rich. What threw me was I got down to a #30 (where all the clunking was) & it still showed rich on the plugs?? So I sort of started again at #45 where it doesn't 'clunk' (wondered if it was 'pinking', something I haven't heard in years)& started playing with the airscrew.......it's still showing running rich on the plugs (& will just stop?), but the 'clunking' seems to have gone (thankfully), so still a case of playing with pilot/air screw.

When I try it's all in Norwegian or some thing.

Hi, I emailed him from the address on this site, he replied (in English) & arranged buying/delivery of the starter clutch, which was really quick.........
