Hi Team, I was able to pick up this bike for zero dollars and although I had heard about it only by its fearsome reputation I really liked the look of it from the beginning. It looks like a motorcycle should as my wife said. So my budget right now is pretty low so I'm just cleaning and testing what I can before this winter when I can hopefully get battery, carb rebuild kits, brake lines, brake rebuilds, chain, etc needed to get it road worthy. It really came in pretty good shape considering it hadn't run for 9 years. Who knows why it stopped running and what is lurking deep inside. Primarily now just taking off bits and seeing what needs cleaned, replaced, painted. Left side cover is missing but looks like everything else is there. THere has definitely been some love given to this bike. Added main fuse, Oil filter modification, but the airbox the the '74 modifications have not been carried out.

Bummer. I'll work on it later today but hopefully this link will work to see the album as a whole. Trippler's tx750 album

It did, and I liked the video of your assistant.

He loves to "Help" He saw me pull an ignition wire and then went and pulled a few wires free from their bullet connectors! But hopefully he'll pick up something in the process

Was able to polish up the rear a little bit and get the swingarm off and painted. The old battery had apparently exploded or leaked horribly at some point and caused some surface rusting on the swingarm mount and de-chromed part of the left exhaust but the pitting was shallow and I painted it up. Going to test compression while the motor is in the frame and then continue disassembly. Anyone here upgrade to the Bronze swingarm bushings? I didn't detect any freeplay with the old plastic ones but just wondering if that is worth doing while I'm here already.

Finally after a winter of crazy life things have gotten to spend some time on the bike. Tested compression on the engine and we are looking in the 60s. With some oil added it pops up to 110 on the left but doesn't improve much on the right. So I'm pulling the engine to see what we are dealing with. I got this bike for free so I don't want to get myself in too deep but I feel like it does deserve to be back on the road. Also curious note, on the exhaust cross over the threads on the right exhaust broke free from the aluminum body of the unit. I'll be interested to see if it tightens up and seals properly.

Sounds like an interesting project, similar to mine! My bike also had low compression in one cylinder, turns out the rings were stuck. You may wanna consider soaking the cylinders overnight in gas and brake fluid mixture to disengage the rings. But it`s a TX, so probably there are other issues in the engine, the best is to pull it apart and look inside. Keep us posted!

I'm Hoping its just the rings but I do plan on taking at least the head off. Assuming the pistons look otherwise okay what are the symptoms that these bikes exploded due to the oil "frothing" issue? It turns over fine with the kick starter.

In one of my engines that was toast the oil screen in the sump was full of metal chippings coming from the bearings. I would pull the sump off and take a look at the screen, if that`s clean you are ok. You will have to inspect the balance chain anyway, it wears out of spec really soon.

Thanks scrambler. That is a pretty simple solution. I don't know how to fix the balance chain issue, I haven't (in my casual looking) found tensioner kits available. I've played with the idea of trying to learn some lathe work and making one but I haven't found schematics for it either. But I'll worry about that bridge when I burn it.

So the sump is full of black hard bits. I didn't check if they were magnetic but they almost felt more like baked rTV than metal. But not a great sign either way.

Someone before you may have overdosed the RTV. You should inspect what material that is though, it it`s not RTV perhaps the balancer chain got loose and it stripped the plastic off from the guides? How much is the free play of the balancer?

scrambler, it seemed "loosish" I didn't take a measurement exactly as I was heading to work and then forgot to measure later because I was too excited to try and get the motor out. Plastic from the chain guard seems like a distinct possibility.
