While waiting for my new Carb boot gaskets I rebuilt my front brake caliper. They work great! Got the gaskets and put them on with stainless fasteners and lock washers. With everything in place I was excited to try for a start. Cranks and cranks and belches and farts and cranks some more and runs for a second then cranks some more and belches a little BUT......no go. It's all together and I love the way it looks but it looks like my dream of summer cruising is dead. I shoved it over to the corner of my cousins garage, flipped it the bird, and left it there.

Just for grins you might want to swap the points leads to the coils. When I got mine it had the same issues and swapping the leads did the trick (easy to do under the tank vs. behind the tranny cover).

Wouldn't switching the spark plug leads do the same thing?

Yes, if they are long enough. Mine weren't.

Unfortunately the leads are correct.

Pulled the plugs to do a compression check and found one plug without any gap at all. Cleaned and re-gapped the plugs. Now it starts right up but idles rough and does a lot of cracking and popping. If I crack it open it smooths out at 5000rpm but gently opening the throttle kills it. At least I seem to be getting somewhere. Where to go next?

I'm going to pull the carbs (again) and polish the bores on the diaphragm pistons. I think that if I get them functioning smoothly it might even out the mid-range problem.

It sounds like it could be low speed jet related because once you get the throttle open the main jet will take over. Are you sure all idle / low speed jets are absolutely clean ? The holes in these are tiny so any minor amount of stale fuel deposit, dirt etc will effect them in the way you are experiencing (trust me - I know !) Only way to really clean them is to put them in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Jets are new but I may have to check the passages.

It seems that my mains aren't working so I pulled the diaphrams out and found some cracking around the seals. Installed new diaphragms. Fingers crossed. Will get back to it when the weather warms. While the carbs were off I blew carb cleaner through all the passages just to be sure. Looks good.

Back to the bike today. Pulled and re-gapped plugs and replaced them with an extra gasket, added high octane gas (petrol to you European types) and went for a start. Starts right up but the cylinders don't run evenly. Perhaps I need to tune the carbs. I will have to research that as I don't currently have knowledge of how to do that. Back to the books! Overall I feel the most optimistic that I have felt in a long while.

Check out the adjustments part of this page www.tobyfolwick.com/tx750/textual/carbs.phpDescribes a method of "syncing" without a vacuum gauge by running each cylinder by itself. Also at the bottom the butterfly/cable sync to make sure both throttle cables move the butterfly at the same time.

Broke down and took it to an expert. They re-jetted the carbs and adjusted and synced them. Starts and runs great. Put on new tires, tubes, rim bands and drive chain. I'm ready for spring. I wish that I could find a reasonably priced electronic ignition for it though.

New to the forum but have a 73’ Yamaha tx750. Here’s a little bit of the back story. Runs great and super clean bike. Has electric ignition and new fuel lines and filters and idols great at 1200 rpm. Issue is that I parked it for 10 days and the gas pet cock was left on or my oldest son tried to ride it and left it on. Came home and tried to crank it and it fired up for 2 seconds then died. Cranked it again thinking it was cold and it ran for 2-3 seconds and it dies. Now it won’t start at all. Turns over smoothly and will stopping trying to start if I turn the switches off. Have gas running through lines and filling blows. Have electric spark at the plugs Will not even sputter with stating fluid. What could be the issue. Thanks for the help and sorry if I stepped in on someone’s thread. I’m kinda new to asking for help. Jayson
