Guys,
After a long Winter, and the weather finally getting decent, I have decided I want to ride. Unfortunately, my TX750 is still haunting me.
Over winter, I did the following:
- Cleaned Carbs - Returned Jetting to Stock - Replaced Points - Checked / Adjusted Valves
Purchased a new battery for the TX... Mine was long overdue from killing it, due to starting issues.
I went by-the-book when it came to valve adjustment, as well as the adjustment on the points. Now I am getting the alternating backfire (right pipe, left pipe, right pipe.....)
I did change a lot of things without testing, and I'm now regretting it.
Bike ran last season, but I would kill the battery by starting and had to jump-start every time I wanted to ride, because I was too bull-headed to buy a new battery.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm ready for my scolding.

Note: I did put a set of XS650 points on the TX750.
For some reason, I did believe that these were / are interchangeable. Can anyone confirm? I'm looking to cross-reference the Part #.

Did you check the service bulletins for a revised valve clearance? I do recall reading something about that somwhere....could be wrong, and,i do believe the points are the same, they are on my 500....and next dumb question, are your intake and exhaust still stock?

I'll double-check the Service Bulletin.
Running MikeXS pod filters and some 12" mufflers off the head pipes. It was running last year, and jetted, but was always hard to start. Always killed the battery trying to start and I'm trying to get it dialed in, so it is reliable.

Okay, first, check the service bulletins on timing, there is an update for it , like 2 degrees retarded, it's how I set mine for static/initial timing, then set bothe sides with a light. If this gets you started, try putting the jets back to where they were before you took them back to stock jetting, i am running a stock intake and shorty exhaust with no baffles, stock jetting one notch up on the needle jets... hope this helps, but, I am no master mechanic, i just work on my own rides

The points are the same for the 650/750 models, part number 256-81621-11-00.

Working on it tonight.
Going to start with the carbs to make sure everything is clean, then points, then finally valves, if I can't get it running right away.

This is my order of tuning, of course everyone has there on way.
Check compression, should be in the 140-150 ft. lb. range (do the valve clearance and check compression first. Check timing set around 6 degrees btdc Check for strong spark, point gap critical for good spark.
Set carb. idle circuit approx. one turn out
Use kick start as not to wear down battery to keep spark strong. If you have float height at 25mm. and all other items set it should fire up within a few kicks.
Hope you got your unit dialed in. These engines like to run rich at idle with the old school carbs.so keep idle to a minimum.

If you have a lot of backfiring you may have problems with the carb. intake boots. I had this issue.

I'm going to check the above items tonight.
I appreciate the input.
I should have ran the bike after each change this Winter, but didn't think anything of it.

Just a thought. If you unplugged the two wires from the points plate at some time during your tune up you could be firing the wrong coil at the wrong time if you mixed the two wires. Double check or just switch them up. You would get consistent backfiring.

Completely cleaned the carbs, thoroughly. Double-checked valve adjustment.
"bigskyforever" - I did check the gray / orange wires to the coil. Reversing these wires pretty much seemed to reverse the flow over air, causing exhaust to suck air, and backfiring out of carbs.
I am going to pull the points plate off tonight and start fresh with the points and the adjustment.
Getting air, fuel, and spark. Got it down to timing, I think... "fingers crossed"

Anyone know the correct order for the small bolt / nut, metal washer and orange washers that connect the coil wires to the points?
Have not found anything online.

It almost sounds like your points are 180 out,or maybe your cam chain jumped time, happened to me last year with my 500,drove me nuts, cleaned carbs, checked point timing, recleaned carbs, new sparkplugs,... stupid cam chain jumped time ,the adjustment spring was bad... just a thought if everything else doesn't work
