Okay here is what i got... my question is, i have read you can boil them in lemon juice or vinegar, do i have to completely disassemble them first.. i.e. will it cause problems? Or can i boil them first to free up stuck part so i can disassemble and give a proper cleaning? Any advice, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.... thanks. Now i know boiling the diaphragm would be bad .. i am speaking of the main body and bowls Attachments:

Here's what I have done, and it may be totally different from others. My way may not be the correct way, just throwing out that disclaimer.
My carbs sat for 20 years as well and were horrible.
- Disassemble as far as you can, including choke assembly, butterflies, ect. - Let them soak in lemon juice, vinegar, or Pinesol (I've used all three and recently have been impressed with Pinesol) - Once the bulk of the gunk has been removed, use some carb cleaner and an old toothbrush for the fine detailing. - Pull the jets out, clean with fishing line, compressed air, or whatever floats your boat. - I did not do anything crazy with the diaphragms. I did not want to buy new ones. - Purchase new gaskets. - I always replace the float bowl screws with allen cap screws. (I've seen too many carb screws stripped from using the wrong size screwdriver)
I recently purchased a handheld media blaster from the local Tractor Supply store. I am now using this for final detailing of my parts, but only using baking soda as the media. It's biodegradable, cheap, and not harsh on carb parts.

The carb guide available here is a good guide since the XS650 also used the BS38 carbs: www.freefilehosting.net/xs650garagecarbguide One thing to watch for if soaking the carbs besides the diaphragms are the butterfly seals. To remove those requires disassembling the butterfly, and the screws are difficult to loosen since they were straked at assembly. There are a lot of threads on the 650 forums with helpful information about cleaning/rebuilding/trouble shooting the BS38 carbs. The good news is the butterfly seals 256-14997-00-00 are readily available if you go that far.

Make sure to oil you diaphragms to keep them pliable and from cracking. Also add a very light coating of oil to the slide chamber to keep things happy. Very important to make sure you do not have any grit or grime.on the diaphragm slides. They also sell carb tools on eBay and Amazon for like $10 - with thr purchase it helped to clear passages that were jammed up. TxMnTx
